چکیده

We describe the surprising amount of high-frequency barotropic motion apparently present in TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter data, and the considerable predictive skill of present ocean general circulation models for what is actually observed. Models can thus be used to remove, at least partially, the energetic high-frequency signals from the data which otherwise are an important source of aliasing.

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE De-Aliasing of Large-Scale High-Frequency Barotropic Signals from Satellite Altimetry in the Japan/East Sea

In the Japan/East Sea, energetic high-frequency large-scale barotropic motions are shown to lead to large aliasing errors in satellite altimetry observations. The combined aliasing from several neighboring and crossing tracks produces artificial mesoscale signals in altimeter-mapped products, significantly changing the map interpretation. The alias can be well suppressed by subtracting the larg...

The Sensitivity of a Global Ocean Model to Wind Forcing: A Test Using Sea Level and Wind Observations From Satellites and Operational Analysis Lee-Lueng

Investigated in this study is the response of a global ocean general circulation model to forcing provided by two wind products: operational analysis from the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP); observations made by the ERS1 radar scatterometer. The sea level simulated by the model using the two wind fields is compared to the observations made by the TOPE~OSEIDON radar altimete...

Estimation and Analysis of Precipitable Water Vapor Using GPS Data and Satellite Altimeter

Determination of water vapor in the atmosphere plays an important role in forecasting weather conditions and precipitation studies. For this reason, it is very important to study the tropospheric delay, especially the wet component, which is due to the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere. In this paper, the amount of water vapor was estimated by altimeter satellite radiometer and GPS data...

Concurrent simulation of the eddying general circulation and tides in a global ocean model

This paper presents a five-year global simulation of HYCOM, the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model, that simultaneously resolves the eddying general circulation, barotropic tides, and baroclinic tides with 32 layers in the vertical direction and 1/12.5 (equatorial) horizontal grid spacing. A parameterized topographic wave drag is inserted into the model and tuned so that the surface tidal elevations...

The distribution of eddy kinetic and potential energies in the global ocean

Understanding of the major sources, sinks, and reservoirs of energy in the ocean is briefly updated in a diagram. The nature of the dominant kinetic energy reservoir, that of the balanced variablity, is then found to be indistinguishable in the observations from a sum of barotropic and first baroclinic ordinary quasi-geostrophic modes. Little supporting evidence is available to partition the sp...
